Today I have been cleaning, doing laundry and getting ready for a party that I have been looking forward to for a whole year. I didn’t want to shower until I was done and ready to cook. So, I threw on one of my baseball caps and decided to run errands.
I was leaving Target and a homeless guy was asking for money. He saw my baseball cap and said “Oh, I want one of those,” and then very loud voices in my head said “Give it to him.”
I struggled with myself all the way to the car, thinking “My hair is a mess, I can’t take this hat off.” “Give it to him!”, I heard again… “Let it go! Your pride, your ego, your need to be right and to look good, and your thinking that anyone cares.”
I got in the car and took the hat off, took all the change I had in the ashtray and pulled up in front of him. He turned around, saw me, and gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen. I said: “Here, it’s yours. You can’t be out here without a cool baseball cap!”
“Thank you, thank you, you made my day.”
“Have a great day” I said, and drove away.
I decided I wanted breakfast and I wasn’t going to care what my hair looked like. I got to the counter and the young lady looked at me like I had forgotten to take off my mask from Halloween. I smiled at her and said “Good morning.”
I was walking out of this very busy restaurant and the song “I’m Your Boogie Man” started playing. I laughed and began to sing out loud and dance to “I’m your boogie man, that’s what I am.”
People looked up at me and said “Go, man” as they joined in. The energy of the moment, fun and joy, peace and love, filled the room as people let go for a minute to be in the now.
The lesson: Let it go! What are you holding to? Come on, let it go and sing with me “I’m your boogie man, that’s what I am!!!”
